Just another day sitting at my desk.
You know, I really wish I had taken the time to live alone as an adult, but I never got the chance. When I moved away from home to go to graduate school, I had a roommate that I hated. Then, my sister and I moved into our own apartment together. I started dating Nick while I lived with my sister and he just happened to move in with us due to unforeseen circumstances. So, I never got the chance to live on my own and I regret that now that I literally never get time to myself. Of course, Nick is a wonderful help around the house with chores, and - oh yeah - he also pays half of all the bills, so there's that.
Anyways, Mother's Day weekend was nice. We went to my mom's house first to drop off our cat, Ollie. Ollie definitely doesn't like riding in the car, but he was pretty good on the ride down. He started making strange meows as we pulled into my mom's neighborhood and literally as we pulled into my mom's driveway, he barfed. I'm actually *glad* he barfed because it turns out he had swallowed a good bit of a thick rubber band! What's terrible is we had found a piece of the rubber band at home several days prior to our trip. I did worry about where the rest of it went but I figured Ollie had just batted it somewhere while playing with it. I had no idea he had swallowed, oh, 5 INCHES of a thick rubber band! Why would a cat do that? So that rubber band had just stayed in his stomach all those days. I'm glad it didn't go down into his bowels and get all twisted up. He could have died! What's strange is he didn't even act differently at all after he had swallowed the rubber band. He still ate normally, pooped, and everything. We had no idea anything was wrong. So, as I said, I'm glad he barfed that up. I'm not sure if he was car sick and that's what made him barf or if his body was just finally ready to get the rubber band out. No idea.
We spent Friday afternoon through late Saturday afternoon with Nick's grandparents, mom, and sister at the grandparents' lake house. I had been really looking forward to eating his grandmother's cooking again, but his mom picked up pizza instead. I wonder if his grandmother's days of cooking large meals for the family are over? I don't know. After dinner, we all went outside and sat on the dock and watched the sun set while Nick and his grandfather smoked cigars. It was a nice evening. The next day, I did stick my feet into the lake, but the water was definitely still pretty cold, so no swimming just yet. I took a walk with Nick, his grandmother, and his sister, and that was nice. I haven't taken a walk in ages, so despite the relatively flat ground, I could feel myself struggling. That's so bad! Overall, it was a very nice visit and like old times again.
We spent Mother's Day with my mom at her new house. She had requested that someone organize the pile of Tupperware and stuff that had been unpacked onto her kitchen counter, so Amber worked on that while I worked on changing out her old ugly gold doorknobs and hinges. I bought her pretty new satin nickel hinges and levered handles. So far, I've only swapped out 2 doors. It's a big job! We also unpacked and organized a few more boxes. She's getting close to being totally unpacked at her house, although her bedroom and her office still need a lot of work.
All the restaurants were super busy, so we picked up prime rib dinners from a restaurant on the lake nearby. It was super tasty! My mom opened gifts and Angel, my older sister, surprised her with a framed never-before-seen picture of the two of them right after Angel was born. My mom was only 31 in the pic (younger than me!). My mom really enjoyed that because Angel is her first baby and there they were, in their first moments together. How neither of one had ever seen that photo before, I don't know. So, that was nice.
Before long, it was time for Nick and me to pack up and head home. I was dreading having to put poor Ollie through another long car ride. Sure enough, he sadly meowed the whole way home. Nick even took a picture of him with one of his paws stuck through the crate door, so desperately trying to escape. It didn't help that there was a major slow down on the interstate at one point due to an accident. We eventually made it home and I was so happy to let Ollie out of his crate. Luckily, he didn't barf this time! Ollie must have been tired from the traveling because when we went to bed, he curled up right next to me and put his head face down in the pillow lol. Poor kitty! I think he was very glad to be home. He's such a good, sweet little kitty. Nick declared that Ollie's days of visits to family are over and that if they want to see him, they will have to come to us. He might be right...poor Ollie doesn't like the car and it is a long ride. He's 9 months now and would be fine on his own for a couple of days. I just hate leaving him alone!! I love him and want him to be with us!
